Vjosa scandal, Albpetrol takes no responsibility; high temperatures are to blame

Albpetrol reacts to the massive pollution of the Vjosa, but denies responsibility...

Instead of accepting responsibility for the oil spill in the Vjosa, one of the last wild rivers in Europe, Albpetrol comes out with a statement that looks more like propaganda vocabulary than an official reaction from a responsible institution.

Footage released by activists shows black mud, hydrocarbon leaks and dead animals on the banks of the Vjosa. The scandal has been documented by activists from EcoAlbania and RiverWatch, who speak of a repeated crime against nature, with consequences that go beyond the polluted area.

But what does the Albpetrol company do? Instead of publicly apologizing and announcing an emergency plan, it justifies itself with "high temperatures" that, according to it, "activate" waste from decades ago! Meanwhile, it itself admits that the Gorishti stream is filled with untreated waste and that the rehabilitation process is moving slowly, with "financial gaps".

In a normal country, such pollution in a national park would be enough to bring justice to the scene and file charges against the company's executives. But in Albania, where "environmental protection" has become a government slogan without substance, everything is covered up with an empty statement.

Albpetrol's reaction

Albpetrol sh.a., in implementing its functional duties, has placed environmental protection at the top of the list of priorities in recent years, as a result of national strategies and decisions of the Albanian Government, in the protection of national natural resources.

In particular, this orientation has become necessary, given the aggravated situation, inherited from decades of exploitation of oil-bearing areas.

The Gorisht-Kocul oil field, published in recent days in the media, is a 60-year-old field as part of the oil extraction industry in this area.

During the activity of this area, for 6 decades, this source has produced numerous wastes, which until a few years ago were not treated according to the technical protocols, which we rigorously implement today for their elimination.

Albpetrol is fully committed to rehabilitating the part of the river connected to the oil-bearing area, according to technical conditions and financial possibilities in the shortest possible time. Currently, there has been no new polluting activity in the area for a long time.

Operations implement technical protocols for extraction and evacuation in accordance with manuals and in full respect of environmental protection. Albpetrol is reducing the amount of legacy waste every year, as evidenced by the actions officially taken.

Unfortunately, this stain is activated at high temperatures, as during the rest of the year, there is no leakage of these wastes, and this is another fact that can be easily proven by environmental protection experts and media reports.

The Albpetrol company will continue with a clearly defined plan of measures to clean up polluted areas for decades, paying special attention to the protection and rehabilitation of the environment, especially in protecting our national natural asset, the Vjosa River.
