SPAK in front of politics, Mertiri: Extraordinary work, many officials are

Five years since the beginning of the work of the Special Prosecutor's Office, many things have changed. The behavior of politics towards SPAK has become even tougher.

To discuss more about the arrests and the work done by SPAK, in the central news edition of Vizion Plus, with the moderator Erion Zeqiraj was the analyst Ergys Mërtiri.

Mertiri said that SPAK has done an extraordinary job in less than 2 years, as he listed the arrests of politicians.

The analyst said that in the first 30 years, SPAK worked at a slow pace, but with Mr. Duman's arrival at the helm, everything changed.

Ergys Mërtiri added that politics has tried to undermine SPAK by blackmailing and threatening it, as well as creating a multitude of obstacles.

Full interview:

- How do you see the work of SPAK in these five years?

Martyrdom: Extraordinary. In the first 30 years, they worked very slowly. They didn't even have buildings, so they had problems in construction. From the moment Dumani came to the head, within 2 years or so, wonderful works were done, which were not even imagined before. Ministers and former ministers have been arrested. Today we have a former deputy prime minister and a number of senior politicians on the run. All these have created a new precedent, which is the precedent of criminality. Everyone is afraid that SPAK might knock on their door one day and put them behind bars. This has awakened hope. This gives rise to a new policy replacing the old one.

-Has politics tried to somehow undermine the work of the Special Prosecutor's Office?

Mertiri: Of course, both the position and the opposition. Berisha has tried to undermine him by openly blackmailing him, threatening him, while Rama has put up a lot of obstacles and attacked him institutionally. All state institutions do not cooperate with SPAK, and this has been denounced by the Special Prosecutor's Office itself. Especially the State Police cooperates the least with SPAK and, on the contrary, creates a lot of obstacles for them. Rama has reduced the SPAK budget, does not meet the requirements for increasing the number of investigators, prosecutors and judges. Rama seems against SPAK. But, above all, the special case is the Xhafaj Commission, which it seems that Rama set up precisely to hinder SPAK, even to extinguish it. This has led to reactions from internationals, who defend SPAK.

- Why is this attack on SPAK happening, when these same politicians have lined up to vote for this new justice? Did they not expect these kinds of arrests, or did they think they would be untouchable?

Mertiri: SPAK has been put under a lot of international pressure, and politicians have voted for it in the hope that they could escape justice, thinking that others could be caught instead of them. This hope has kept them alive. Politics has hoped to survive this process in two ways: first, the government has thought that, by threats and by exposing SPAK as its instrument, it can avoid investigations. Secondly, there was hope that SPAK would be on her side.
