The educated in Albania are changing their preferences, the number of graduates

In Albania, a noticeable shift is being observed in the academic preferences of young people. Traditional professions such as teaching, journalism and the arts are losing ground, while more and more students are turning towards medicine, engineering and technology.

The latest data from INSTAT shows that, from 2019 to 2024, fields such as education, journalism and the humanities have lost over 10,000 graduates. In education alone, the number of graduations has fallen from over 9,000 in 2019 to just 6,840 this year, a silent alarm about the shortage of teachers in the future.

"There are several factors, but the most important is the speed and the possibility of accessing work as soon as possible. Also, regardless of the profession, the experience in Albania has shown that many things can be done by anyone. Secondly, this is related to job opportunities, not only in Albania, but also abroad. The trends are towards information technology, medical sciences and economics. This connects professionals with more opportunities, both to open private enterprises and to work as freelancers ," said Erion Muça, an education and employment expert.

The arts and social sciences are also in sharp decline. Meanwhile, fields like medicine and engineering are seeing steady growth. In the past five years, over 4,200 more students have graduated in the health and wellness field.

In the 2023–2024 academic year alone, 28,193 students graduated from Albanian higher education. The majority, 51.3 percent, completed their Bachelor's degree studies, while 43.1 percent graduated with a Master's degree.

"Universities in Albania need to be much more practical, to adapt to the changing dynamics of the labor market. This requires continuous updating of curricula and academic staff ," added expert Muça.

The most popular field this year was “Business, Administration and Law”, with almost a quarter of graduates – around 24.4 percent. Meanwhile, the gender divide remains pronounced: Women make up 65.8 percent of graduates, dominating in education, health and journalism./ EuronewsAlbania
