Security expert Gert Metani says that the perpetrator of the Durrës incident, where two children lost their lives and a third was seriously injured, could be sentenced to 10 years in prison according to the criminal procedure code.
"The criminal provision is like this: accident with consequences, from one to five years, and then if there are aggravating circumstances such as alcohol consumption, wrong maneuvers, it goes up to 10 years. And if there are mitigating factors that the person has provided first aid, a request for forgiveness, repentance, reflection on what he has done... I am not a judge and normally all cases will be analyzed, but based on the Criminal Code, the provisions in force, the circumstances that we know for now, the average is 10 years," said the expert.
Following the serious accident in Durrës, the Durrës District Police Director, Afrim Tafa, was suspended from duty until the investigation is completed. Ervin Hodaj has been temporarily appointed in his place.
The Deputy Director for Public Order and Security at the Durrës Police, Zija Sulaj, and the Chief of the Traffic Police Sector, Kreshnik Skëndo, have also been suspended for poor performance.
Also, immediately after the event, the General Director of the State Police, Skënder Hital, ordered the Traffic Police Directorate to establish a group of experts who went to the scene to analyze the causes and circumstances of the accident.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Professional Standards at the General Directorate of the State Police has launched a disciplinary investigation to assess whether or not there is responsibility among the ranks of Police employees for this case.
