Tension outside the Albanian Parliament after the approval of the draft law on "Gender Equality". Socialist Party deputies were greeted with chants of "National shame" from dozens of citizens gathered to oppose the law that was voted on today in the plenary session.
Protesters stood outside Parliament for hours, holding banners and demanding that the law not be approved, while inside the chamber 77 votes in favor were recorded. They described the decision as “a blow to traditional values and the Albanian family.”
After the plenary session closed, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, accompanied by several opposition MPs, came out to meet the protesters. He thanked them for their stance and reiterated his opposition to the law, calling it “paving the way for the installation of a dangerous ideology in Albania.”
The protest ended without incident, while the debate over the gender equality law is expected to continue in the coming days, with civil society and political parties divided into strong positions.
