Tried in Tirana, but without success; Albania aims for differentiated waste

Albania will aim for differentiated waste management. Although it was tried, but unsuccessfully in Tirana, the Ministry of Environment has drafted a draft decision that dictates the taking of measures by local self-government units in order to ensure the differentiated collection of municipal waste.

"The purpose of this decision is to approve the criteria, procedures and deadlines for the implementation of differentiated waste collection, with the aim of facilitating or improving the preparation for reuse, recycling and other recovery operations for waste streams in the territory of the Republic of Albania ," says the Ministry of Environment.

The implementation of the legal initiative aims to recycle 55 percent of plastic, 30 percent of wood, 60-80 percent of metals and 85 percent of paper and cardboard by 2035. The document also specifies the types of waste that will be subject to differentiated management: “Mixed household waste and separately collected waste, including paper and cardboard, glass, metals, plastics, bio-waste, wood, textiles, packaging, equipment, including all their individual or combined components and consumables that are integral parts of these devices, battery waste, bulky waste, including furniture, mattresses and the like ”.

The Ministry of Environment, meanwhile, is aware that implementing this policy is a difficult path. The expectations are that by 2045, 65 percent of waste in the country will be recycled: “Regarding the suggestions for standardizing colors, container shapes, minimum frequency of cleaning, disinfection, and the use of containers with sensors, we clarify that these criteria and procedures are determined by the local self-government unit itself, taking into account the waste stream, population density, and technical and infrastructural conditions of the area . ”

Environmental protection is the test that Albania still has to pass. Even in the latest progress report from the European Commission, the country failed to receive a convincing passing grade./ A2CNN
