New details have emerged regarding the serious incident that occurred in Kalithea, Greece, where a 2-year-old girl of Albanian origin slipped and fell into a fountain. She is reported to be in serious condition.
In a statement to Greek media, the person who provided first aid to the little girl, a restaurant worker, recounted the dramatic moments of the event, admitting that he was forced to pretend to be a doctor just to be allowed to intervene to save the child's life.
"I suddenly saw many people gathered in one place and I thought something joyful was happening. But when I got closer, I heard screaming and saw panic. A little girl was unconscious," he said.
According to him, the child had been pulled out of the fountain and was showing no signs of life. At that moment, he decided to take control of the situation.
"I told them I was a doctor, just so they would let me operate. There was no time to waste," the young man said.
He says he immediately performed artificial respiration on the little girl, adding that for a moment he thought her condition was stabilizing.
" After a few moments, the girl started to spit out a liquid from her mouth and that was the first sign that she was reacting ," he recounts.
However, the situation became tense when the child's parents intervened. "As soon as they saw me helping her, they came running and took the girl in their arms. I told them not to move her, because they had to continue helping and wait for the ambulance, but they didn't listen to me ," he added.
According to his testimony, the parents, along with the police who arrived at the scene, quickly left. "They disappeared from the scene, even though I tried to convince them that it was dangerous to move the child in that condition," he concluded.
The event has caused strong reactions in public opinion, while Greek authorities are investigating the full circumstances of the incident and the manner of reaction after removing the child from the fountain.
