Universities spent 42 million euros in one year... just for scientific research

The backbone of universities is scientific research, but the funds that universities have allocated for this item can be considered alms.

For the 2022-2023 academic year, public universities spent a minimal amount of only 79,000 Euros for studies and scientific research out of the 42 million Euros they spent in total.

"At the moment we speak, we don't have universities, we have gymnasiums and professional schools. We still haven't built what is called universities, which should produce with the product it has. At the university, he should try to produce new products in technology, medicine" , said Taulant Muka, scientific researcher.

"The new reform of the universities, which was presented as a new service and financing scheme, has failed, so the universities are also in this state. One of the principles was autonomy, and aimed at quality in teaching and research. Today, after so many years, we have neither teaching quality nor scientific research, there is no interest. Without scientific research, there are no universities, we have reduced them to the level of higher secondary education",   said Mirela Karabin, lecturer.

The money that as a rule should go to scientific research, which is the mission of universities, has ironically gone to the furnishing of universities, which takes the lion's share. Thus, the University of Tirana spent a total of 380,000 euros for the purchase of furniture and furnishings, while the Polytechnic spent 221,000 euros for the renovation of the "Silvano Pedrollo" hall inside the Rectorate, a hall which was in good infrastructural condition.

The Polytechnic also spent 60,000 euros on flexible poles with wind sensors.

"At this moment, when they take the fee, we also take money from them for other services and we do not offer them quality services, definitely they will not emigrate only for the profession, but they will also emigrate to study. In Munich, the study fee is 84 euros per year, in addition to the cost of living and food", said Rigels Xhemollari, Civic Center.
