'Gërdeci'/ GJKKO again overthrows Fatmir Mediu/ Irena Gjoka is not excluded
Judge Atalanta Zeqiraj has dismissed the request for the exclusion of judge Irena Gjoka from the review of the “Gërdeci” file, where former Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu is accused of the criminal offense of abuse of office.
After reviewing the request, the court decided that it was filed in violation of the procedural deadlines, considering it inadmissible for this reason. According to the decision, failure to comply with the deadline has automatically led to the dismissal of the request filed by the defense lawyers.
During the hearing, in front of the judge and SPAK prosecutor Arben Kraja, lawyer Henrik Ligori objected to some of the arguments presented by the Special Prosecution Office.
"The Ministry of Defense is a structure with two heads: a political part and the other part, the General Staff. The people who were responsible for Gërdec have taken their responsibilities. As for the accusation about ammunition, there is no legal act that divides them into large caliber and small caliber. The Minister of Defense is responsible for the policies of the ministry. He cannot be accused of not knowing the calibers, since the General Staff deals with this work. How can a political ministry be charged with technical responsibility? As for the accusation about transportation, it is not the minister's duty, because there are structures that deal with invoices. It seems that the accusation raised by the prosecution is unfounded," said Ligori.
The large port in Porto-Romano/ What is Edi Rama's "Plan C"?
Edi Rama warned at the SP group meeting that, if the large port project in Porto Romano is blocked, he has not only a plan B, but also a plan C, to get out of the situation.
The statement was made after two sensational developments: the raid by officers of the National Bureau of Investigation, who seized the tender documentation, as well as a verbal protest by the head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Albania, Grant Van Cleve, who asked the prime minister to cancel the tender.
But what happened here and what is hidden behind the scenes?
The large port of Porto Romano, initially allocated with a project that goes up to 400 million euros, with the possibility of growth in the future, has a very large potential of economic and financial interests.
Therefore, there is a clear interest, also for the reason that in addition to commercial vehicles, i.e. containers of civilian goods, NATO military vehicles are also expected to be attached. As is the case with the port of Naples and that of Gioia Tauro in Calabria, which gives these sites a great processing and profit power.
"Employment is not based on merit"/ WB Report: Albania without unified standards
The World Bank has listed Albania among the countries that do not apply unified standards for recruiting talent in the public sector.
The recently published Global Development Report 2025 highlights that Albania faces an unequal distribution of employment practices, where a candidate's fate to become part of the public service depends more on the institution to which they apply than on a unified national regulator.
At the national level, the average of Albanian civil servants recruited through written meritocracy stands somewhere around 50%. While in some Albanian institutions the written recruitment process is almost negligible (around 20%), in other organizations within the same country this practice reaches over 70%.
This difference, according to the World Bank, shows that the employment process in the Albanian public administration depends more on the internal policies of the institutions than on a consolidated national standard.
War in Iran/ Serbia surprisingly adds Albania to the list of unsafe countries
The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has included Albania on the list of countries that should be visited with additional precautions, as part of new recommendations for travel abroad published after the outbreak of war in Iran.
On the same list, Croatia is classified in an even higher risk category, where travel is recommended only "in cases of extreme necessity."
The Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs reacted by stating that Croatia is one of the safest countries in Europe, while Albanian authorities have not commented so far on Albania's inclusion on this list.
