Albania enters the dark ages: Edi Rama is no longer governing; he is

From Tirana to Moscow, the siege of the media, the alphabet of autocrats...

Today, in the middle of Tirana, in broad daylight, the same thing happened that Sali Berisha did at the height of his power, but with one difference: Sali Berisha burned down the editorial office, while Rama sent the police to surround a media outlet, block its signal, and publicly shame journalists. This is not just an arbitrary act, this is the official act of Albania's transition to an autocratic and police regime.

Edi Rama is no longer governing, he is administering fear. And when a prime minister starts to be afraid of a camera, a microphone, a journalist, he has lost not only his democratic compass, but also his moral one. In a normal country, a government that sends the police against a television station would fall within the hour. In Rama's Albania, this is simply Monday.

In Tirana, police surround a media outlet, jam its signal, and clash with journalists. No, this is not a scene from Putin's Moscow, Erdogan's Ankara, or Vučić's Belgrade. This is Edi Rama's Albania in 2025. And like any autocrat whose mind is racing with power, he does not see the media as an institution of truth, but as his enemy.

Putin closed Dozhd and Novaya Gazeta with show trials. Erdogan surrounded Cumhuriyet with police, arrested journalists, and took control of the television signal. Vučić turned RTS into a government mouthpiece and closed the frequencies to those who did not bow to him.

Rama?

It is doing the same thing, but with its refined propaganda style, starting with a silent siege and a signal jamming, to test how much we will dare to react.

This is not a “technical incident”, it is not an “interference with legal procedures”. This is a mafia message from the Prime Minister’s Office: “We control everything. We can shut down whoever we want, when we want, how we want”. Today it is News 24, tomorrow it could be any television, any media, any voice that dares not to be part of the propaganda.

This is not an incident. This is a message: “There is no limit to what I can do.” And unfortunately, instead of seeing a civic revolt, we see only a cold indifference; the same that accompanied the capture of the Supreme Court, the same that remained silent when prosecutors turned into government notaries.

In a democracy, the government is afraid of the media. In an autocracy, the media is afraid of the government. Today we clearly saw the reality we live in. This is the manual of authoritarian regimes: first they undermine institutions, then they take justice for themselves, then they neutralize the opposition, and finally they shut down free speech. From this moment on, everything else is just a game with one-sided rules.

Anyone who thinks this is excessive should ask themselves: What if tomorrow the police come to the door of your newsroom? What if tomorrow you have nowhere to express your opinion, because every signal, every portal, every page, every camera is under the command of a man? Today it's News 24. Tomorrow, you.

If we remain silent today, history will see us as those who saw the light go out and decided not to light a single candle./ Pamphlet
