Political earthquake in Austria, the chancellor resigns; Sebastian Kurz returns

If there are new elections, the right-wing FPÖ can hope for a resounding victory. The latest polls signaled a huge increase in votes compared to the last National Council elections.

Political earthquake in Austria. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer resigned on Saturday evening after coalition negotiations between the conservative ÖVP and the social democratic SPÖ broke down.

Talks between the ÖVP, SPÖ and the Neo Liberals had broken down on Friday. It is unclear what will happen next.

On Sunday, the ÖVP leadership will meet, while former chancellor Sebastian Kurz is considered a possible successor to Nehammer.

An ÖVP insider told BILD that “as things stand, we would not stand a chance against the FPÖ in the new elections, but with Kurz the race would be open again. Karl Nehammer has completely failed."

If there are new elections, the right-wing FPÖ can hope for a resounding victory. The latest polls signaled a huge increase in votes compared to the last National Council elections.

After that, the FPÖ could significantly increase its result from 29 percent to around 35 percent.

SPÖ and ÖVP were unable to agree on various issues. The SPÖ demanded, among other things, that the deficit in the state budget be restructured, while the ÖVP was strictly against additional taxes.

"We negotiated long and honestly. No agreement is possible with the SPÖ on the essential points," said von Nehammer.
