The massive and sudden attack by the militants in the Gaza Strip surprised Israelis, who saw how Hamas fighters defeated one of the most advanced security systems in the world - the so-called "iron wall" or "smart fence".
At least 900 people were killed in Israel and more than 2,600 were injured and more than 100 people were taken hostage. According to a statement from the Palestinian Authority, Israel hit Gaza with airstrikes, killing at least 700 people.
All this happened after the members of Hamas managed to cross the "iron wall", which separates Israel from Gaza. It is equipped with the latest technology, designed to detect any attack on the country's security, but Hamas succeeded.

"Iron Wall"
In 2021, Israel announced the completion of the "iron wall," a 65-kilometer-long barricade along the Gaza Strip that also had an underground concrete barrier, which in total cost about $1.5 billion.
The project became public in 2016 after Hamas used the underground tunnels to attack Israeli forces in the 2014 war. More than 140,000 tons of iron and steel, a hundred cameras, radars and sensors were needed for construction. On the Israeli side, observation posts and sand dunes were set up so that no detail was lost.
Billions were spent on the armored iron wall that Israel built underground around Gaza, and billions more on cement fortresses, but the attack came from the ground and the air, and its soldiers were captured and killed or fled like terrified rats. #Israel #Palestine #Hamas pic.twitter.com/PFkAKbebIG

Former Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in 2021 that an "iron wall" had been erected between Hamas and southern Israel. On Saturday, that wall was breached at 29 points, even though Israeli observation towers were placed every 150 meters along the wall. It soon became clear that there was a shortage of personnel on the border and a large part of the Israeli army was focused on the unrest in the West Bank.
You'd obviously be a fool if you suspected there was a connection to Netanyahu's recent popularity and the sudden ability to not only breach Israel's shiny and new $1.1bn iron wall, but get into Israel deep enough to cause that much carnage. pic.twitter.com/Sq7CGhBfXr

" The insurmountable parts of the system are precisely those that indicate the danger. But if you don't see the danger coming, it's just a fence. A big but ordinary fence ," said Matthew Levitt, director of the counterterrorism program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
