The EU must prepare for the accession of 10 new countries. This was the statement of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell. He requested a deadline from the EU for the enlargement, as this would mobilize the energy of the aspirant countries and the union more.
Borell also announced that the next meeting between the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, will take place on September 14. In addition to this meeting, Borrell also announced a joint meeting of EU foreign ministers with those of the Western Balkans under the direction of the Spanish EU presidency.
"The Spanish presidency is proposing - and I think it's a good proposal - to hold a meeting together with the foreign ministers of the Western Balkans. We will do it at the end of next month, after other events related to the Balkans such as the Berlin Process. I think it is very important that the ministers, under the Spanish Presidency, take stock of what is happening in the Western Balkans.
On September 14, I will organize a new meeting of the High Level Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia as a facilitator of this dialogue to seek solutions.
The issue of enlargement has floated during our discussions. Ukraine should become a member of the European Union. Western Balkans also as soon as possible.
I think the war in Ukraine has had the effect of accelerating the enlargement process, which is certainly a merit-based process. A country will become a member when it meets all the conditions. But at the same time, I think it's good to have a political objective – a horizon – to give political impetus to the process. And also, for us - because we have to prepare for an enlargement that could add 10 more members to the European Union," said Borrell.
Although he did not give any deadline for new memberships in the EU, Borrell said that the proposal of a calendar from the European Union would mobilize the energies of the EU and the candidate countries, thus supporting the statements of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel at the forum. strategic meeting of BLED, where he defined the year 2030 as the deadline for the EU integration of the Western Balkan countries.
