The European Commission spent 2.75 million euros ($3 million) on photos and videos of its commissioners from the end of 2019 to April this year.
The sum was revealed in the commission's response to a parliamentary question from a member of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) European Parliament (EP).
Expenses in the current legislative period included money spent on photographers, videographers and makeup artists. About 95% of the expenses were for salaries and travel expenses.
" Photographic coverage of the activities of...members is essential for informing citizens about the Commission's work and ensuring transparency ," wrote EU budget commissioner Johannes Hahn.
He added that it is necessary to cover the photographic costs of meetings, official visits, conferences and press events in Brussels, as well as official visits of commissioners abroad.
" A division of costs for individual commissioners was not possible ", he added. The European Commission consists of 27 commissioners from member states.
