US airstrikes on Iran's Fordow nuclear plant appear to have left at least six large craters, indicating the use of bunker-busting bombs, according to a CNN analysis of satellite imagery.
Images captured by satellite company Maxar showed six distinct impact craters at two nearby locations in Fordow, a top-secret site buried deep in the mountains. The craters can be seen along a ridge that extends above the underground complex.
Earlier on Sunday, a US official confirmed to CNN that the US had used B-2 bombers to drop more than a dozen massive "bunker-busting" bombs as part of the attack on Fordow and two other nuclear power plants.
These weapons can penetrate deep underground before exploding and are seen as essential for targeting the object, most of which is buried underground.
Satellite images also showed significant changes in the color of the mountainside where the site is located, indicating that a large area was covered in a layer of gray ash after the attacks. So far, the extent of damage to the underground facility is unclear.
Israel needed US intervention, especially to hit Fordow, because it is built on a mountainside. It needed special anti-bunker bombs to get there.
