Ukraine vows to expand attacks on Russia

The commander of the Ukrainian army vowed to increase the "scale and depth" of attacks on Russia, in a statement released on Sunday, June 22.

He said the attacks are proving "effective" and that Kiev will only strike military targets.

"Of course we will continue. We will increase the scale and depth" of the attacks, said the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Oleksandr Syrsky, during a conversation with reporters.

He made these statements at a time when diplomatic efforts to end the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine have stalled.

The last direct meeting between the two sides was held almost three weeks ago and no further talks are planned.

"We will not simply stand on the defensive. Because that achieves nothing and ultimately leads to withdrawal, loss of people and territory," Syrsky said.

Syrsky also acknowledged that Russia has some advantages in drone warfare, particularly in producing fiber-optic drones, which are difficult to shoot down.

"In this field, unfortunately, they have the advantage both in numbers and in the range of drone use," he said.

He also claimed that Ukraine still controls 90 square kilometers in Russia's Kursk region, where Kiev carried out a cross-border offensive in August last year.

"These are preventive actions on our part, in response to a possible enemy attack," he added.

Moscow currently controls about a fifth of Ukraine and claims four Ukrainian regions as its own, in addition to Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.

Kiev has accused Moscow of deliberately sabotaging a peace agreement in order to prolong its offensive against Ukraine and seize more territory./ REL
