A horrific attack has shattered the peace of a small town in the south of France. Investigators are following all leads, but are focusing on a possible revenge attack.
A wedding turned into a tragedy in Goult, a small town of about a thousand inhabitants in Vaucluse in southern France. On the night between Saturday and Sunday, at around 4:30 a.m., a group of armed men with their faces covered entered the wedding and opened fire on the newlyweds. The bride was killed, along with one of the attackers. Three other people, including a 10-year-old child, were seriously injured.
According to sources close to the investigation, and reported by the newspaper Le Parisien, the attackers, at least 4 men driving a Volkswagen Golf, waited until the couple was about to leave the party to attack them. The shots were fired at close range, causing panic among the guests. In a desperate attempt to escape, the groom reversed the car and ran over one of the perpetrators of the murder, who died on the spot. The other victims were directly hit by the shots.
Numerous gendarmerie patrols intervened at the scene and a large search operation was launched in the area to find the perpetrators who were fleeing. Authorities have opened an investigation, currently classified as a possible "sweeping of accounts".
The first information that has come to light links the victim's (bride's) husband to a criminal record: the man, a member of the Moroccan community, is known to law enforcement for drug trafficking and criminal connections. This detail reinforces the hypothesis of a planned act with a criminal motive, although, investigators emphasize, no leads are being ruled out at the moment.
The dramatic episode has deeply shocked the local community, where similar events are rare. Goult, known for its tranquility and as a destination for rural tourism, woke up to the chaos of a Wild West scene.
The investigation is still ongoing, while the three injured are fighting for their lives in regional hospitals.
