87 political prisoners released for New Year's Eve in Venezuela

At least 87 people imprisoned following Venezuela's 2024 presidential election, the results of which have been contested by the opposition, were released on New Year's Eve, two non-governmental organizations said Monday, a week after authorities announced the release of 99 other detainees over Christmas.

"This morning, January 1, mothers and relatives reported further releases of political prisoners from the maximum security prison of Tocoron," in Aragua state, about 134 kilometers from Caracas, said the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve).

All those released were arrested amid the political crisis caused by the re-election of Nicolas Maduro for a third term in office in July 2024. The opposition had denounced fraud at the time. After Maduro was declared the winner of the election, demonstrations were organized that led to the arrest of about 2,400 people, whom the president himself described as "terrorists."
