Switzerland is in mourning after a devastating fire broke out on New Year's Eve at the Le Constellation bar in the luxury ski resort of Crans-Montana. The toll so far is at least 47 dead and 115 injured, most of them young people aged 16-26, while many Italian citizens are among them, some of whom are still missing.
As a mark of respect for the victims and solidarity with their families, the Swiss government has declared five days of national mourning, an extraordinary decision given the scale of this tragedy. Flags have been lowered to half-mast and festive activities have been cancelled.
The President of the Helvetic Confederation, Guy Parmelin, visited the scene and described the fire as “one of the worst tragedies Switzerland has ever experienced.” He promised a full investigation into the causes and measures to prevent similar events in the future, stressing that the country would stand united in this moment of pain.
On the Italian side, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that 12-15 Italian citizens are hospitalized in Swiss hospitals, some in serious condition, while 16 Italians are missing. Three of the seriously injured are expected to be transferred to Milan for treatment.
Meanwhile, the local community has placed flowers and messages of condolence near the scene. Authorities warn that identifying the victims and treating the injured could take weeks, while the five days of mourning are seen as a period of national reflection on an event that has deeply shocked Switzerland and international opinion.
