Would a new US-Iran deal surpass Obama's 2015 nuclear pact?

Initial talks between the US and Iran took place in Pakistan over the weekend, but they didn't even last a full day. After 18 hours, the negotiations ended. With that, no peace deal or agreement was reached.

But signs are now pointing to a revival of talks between the two sides, with Donald Trump telling Sky News just last night that it is "very possible" that a deal could be reached by the end of the month.

One of the main sticking points in the talks is uranium, the US does not want Iran to get what it needs to develop a nuclear bomb, while Tehran wants the right to continue building its stockpile.

Military analyst Michael Clarke said he believes a deal is most likely to resemble what Barack Obama secured in 2015, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

That agreement limited the amount of uranium enrichment by the Iranians to 3.67%, which is the level for civilian use.

“The Iranians certainly thought they could find a way out of this situation, but they didn’t really do that until the deal was torn up by President Trump in 2018, when he walked away from it. And then they started getting pretty rich. Up until that point, the deal was holding up and holding up better than the Iranians thought. They thought they would be able to get away with a lot more ,” he said.

-Iran does not accept new offer

But the US offer now is to prevent Iran from enriching uranium for up to 20 years, Clarke said.

" I don't think the Iranians will agree to not enrich uranium at all, because they consider the ability to enrich uranium a symbol of their progress as a modern country. They say everyone else can enrich uranium, even very small countries are allowed a civilian nuclear program. We live in a world with climate change. We live in a world transitioning to non-fossil fuels. Why don't you let us enrich uranium?" he added.

Clarke said that whatever that proposal is, however far it goes, I would be very surprised if the Iranians agree not to enrich uranium. I think we will end up, if there is a deal... it will look a lot like the 2015 deal. Because "that was the best deal possible."
