Hungary's Prime Minister-elect, Péter Magyar, aims to release over 30 billion euros frozen by Brussels due to concerns over the rule of law...
The European Commission is sending officials to Budapest to begin negotiations with Hungary’s newly elected Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, on unlocking billions of euros in EU funds for Hungary. The Commission delegation will meet with representatives of the Tisza party on Friday, Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho told Politico.
The meeting will take place five days after Péter Magyar ended Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule in Sunday's parliamentary elections, and a few weeks before the new government is expected to take office.
Orbán and his ministers will remain in power with limited powers until at least May 5. Magyar's landslide victory has given the Tisza party a qualified majority in Parliament, enabling it to pass sweeping reforms to restore judicial independence, academic freedom and media pluralism, reversing years of democratic setbacks.
The prime minister-elect's main objective is to unlock more than 30 billion euros in EU funds frozen by Brussels over rule of law concerns. He faces particular pressure to release around 10 billion euros of Covid-19 recovery funds, which expire at the end of August this year.
The meeting in Budapest follows a phone call between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Magyar on Tuesday, during which the two discussed "immediate priorities," as the Commission head wrote on the X platform.
“Quick work is needed to make, restore, align, and reform,” she wrote.
"Let's restore the rule of law. Let's align ourselves with our common European values. And let's reform, to unlock the opportunities that European investments offer," she emphasized.
After the call, Magyar said that both sides “agreed that EU funds intended for the Hungarian people” should be unblocked and that “the Commission will work closely with us to meet the extremely tight deadline and deliver results.”
"The new government will make the key political decisions on how these funds will be unlocked and invested, in line with the clear mandate given by the Hungarian people last Sunday," he added.
