The hearing held in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives was accompanied by strong political tensions, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the center of the debates.
Over the course of nearly four hours, Rubio was questioned and criticized by Democratic lawmakers, who challenged him not only on American foreign policy and the conflict with Iran, but also on his stances toward President Donald Trump.
One of the most heated moments of the hearing came when Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu showed videos that he said showed Trump sleeping during meetings. He accused Rubio of not telling the truth when he stated that he had never seen the president in such situations.
The clashes also continued with Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, who asked Rubio to declare who had won the 2020 presidential election. The Secretary of State avoided answering, arguing that he had not been called to discuss domestic policy issues.
The debate took an unusual turn when a Wall Street Journal report about a pair of shoes that Trump allegedly gifted to cabinet members was included in the discussion.
"Who's talking about shoes?" Rubio initially reacted, before admitting that he had bought a pair of Florsheim shoes, ironically adding that they fit him very well.
At several points, Rubio openly expressed his frustration with the way the hearing was being conducted, accusing some lawmakers of using the hearing for political attacks rather than to get answers.
"Is this the Foreign Affairs Committee or a circus?" he said during the debate.
Clashes between the parties continued until the end of the session, turning the hearing into one of the most tense political debates in recent days in Washington.
