A serious incident shook the center of Leipzig on Monday afternoon, when a vehicle drove into pedestrians, causing casualties and injuries in one of the city's busiest areas.
According to German media, at least two people were killed and eight others were injured in the collision that occurred on Grimmaische Straße. The circumstances of the incident remain unclear.
Police have launched a large-scale operation in the area, with authorities confirming that the vehicle hit the crowd directly. A police spokesman told MDR Sachsen that there were "several injured people" but gave no further details on their condition or the cause of the incident.
A Volkswagen Taigo was seen speeding through a pedestrian zone, local broadcaster Radio Leipzig reported. Eyewitnesses said there were several bodies covered in sheets.
About ten ambulances responded to the scene, while surrounding businesses were immediately closed for safety reasons, Bild newspaper reported.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed the preliminary death toll and said the surrounding area had been secured. The driver was also arrested.
" It's shocking. All I can do now is express my solidarity with the families of the victims. Everything else will have to be determined by the work of the police and investigative authorities ," Jung told reporters at the scene.
