A report published by Axios has raised concerns within the White House about how journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan obtained detailed details from meetings held in the "Situation Room", one of the most secure facilities in the US government.

The two New York Times journalists are expected to publish their new book, "Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump," on June 23, which contains detailed descriptions of internal discussions on sensitive issues, including Iran policy and managing the political fallout of the Epstein dossier.

According to Axios, some administration officials were surprised by the level of detail released and raised the question of whether the authors might have obtained audio recordings of the meetings. However, the report notes that there is no public evidence that Haberman and Swan possess such recordings.

One of the published excerpts describes a debate on Iran, where Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to the authors, dismissed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's arguments for regime change in Tehran. Another excerpt shows a high-level meeting on communications strategy regarding the controversy surrounding the Epstein dossier.

According to the authors, their reporting is based on about 1,000 interviews with officials, legislators, donors and other people involved in political developments. Political journalism experts estimate that, when multiple sources describe the same event, it is possible to accurately reconstruct dialogues and the flow of discussions even without the existence of audio recordings.

However, the administration's concern reflects a broader problem: the sheer number of people who attend or are briefed on sensitive meetings. If it were proven that unauthorized recordings from the Situation Room existed, it would constitute a serious breach of security protocols and would trigger an immediate investigation.

Lawyers note that, even if such recordings existed, legal liability would fall primarily on the person who created or released them, not on the journalists who legally obtained them. American legal practice and the protections afforded by the First Amendment to the Constitution traditionally favor the publication of information in the public interest.

At this time, there is no evidence to support the claims of secret recordings. The Axios report indicates more the level of concern within the administration than the existence of a confirmed leak. The debate remains open and is expected to intensify after the full book is published.
