Security firms and British authorities raise alarm over growing risk to businesses and critical infrastructure
Cybersecurity firms report a surge in criminal activity linked to the Iranian state, writes Mickey Carroll, science and technology reporter.
The warnings come after the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warned companies of an "increased risk" of cyberattacks, following the attacks on Iran.
The threat intelligence team at Nozomi Networks Labs said it has seen increased activity from three main groups linked to Iran. According to the report, the manufacturing and transportation sectors are the most frequent targets.
However, analysts point out that the groups have not yet carried out devastating attacks. They are trying to gain access to systems by quietly mapping digital environments and verifying access.
"They have not yet taken any destructive actions ," a Nozomi spokesman said.
Jake Moore, global cybersecurity advisor at ESET, sees this development as indicative of the nature of modern warfare. According to him, in addition to physical attacks, there are signs of widespread digital disruption aimed at weakening communications and increasing confusion at critical moments.
Moore warns that distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks can disrupt communications, which are essential in such situations.
He calls on businesses and critical infrastructure operators in the UK to treat the situation as a credible threat and to immediately review their level of exposure.
A day earlier, the NCSC advised organizations to prepare for potential attacks by educating themselves on different types of threats and signing up for an early warning service. The institution recommended that organizations with offices or supply chains in the region adapt cybersecurity measures, increase monitoring and analyze external vulnerabilities.
