Switzerland's main intelligence agency, the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS), says Switzerland has become an important hotspot for Russian espionage. According to a recent report, a third of the 220 officials Russia has accredited to Switzerland are suspected spies.
The expulsions of diplomatic corps and other elements from countries in Europe and North America have weakened Russian espionage in those countries, but in Bern, according to the report, it continues undisturbed.
"In Europe, Switzerland is one of the countries with the highest number of Russian intelligence officers operating under diplomatic cover, partly due to its role as host to international organizations," the report said.
The UN has its European headquarters in Geneva, where the offices of several UN agencies and other international organizations are also located.
"Of the approximately 220 people accredited as diplomatic or techno-administrative staff at the Russian missions in Geneva and Bern, probably at least a third work for the Russian intelligence services," said FIS chief Christian Dussey.
The Swiss secret service, which has a staff of 450, said the war in Ukraine was forcing it to extend its monitoring to areas that had previously received little attention, such as Turkey and India, because Russia has used companies in countries such for procurements.
According to the FIS, China also counts dozens of spies in its diplomatic missions in Switzerland. But China's agents are mostly covered by engagement as scientists, journalists or business executives.
