The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed sanctions on four companies involved in "gold handling" and a person they say made "arms deals" linked to the Wagner Group.
The announcement of the sanctions comes days after the short-lived rebellion led by the leader of the mercenary group, Yevegny Prigozhin.
" They target companies in Russia, the United Arab Emirates and the Central African Republic that have engaged in illegal gold deals to finance the Wagner Group to support and expand its armed forces, including in Ukraine and Africa," the statement said . .
The targeted individual, Andrey Nikolayevich Ivanov (Ivanov), is a Russian executive at the Wagner Group who “worked closely with Prigozhin's entity Africa Politologia and senior Malian government officials on arms deals and other activities of the Wagner Group in Mali.
“ The Wagner Group finances its brutal operations in part by exploiting natural resources in countries like the Central African Republic and Mali. The United States will continue to target the Wagner Group's revenue streams to deter its expansion and violence in Africa, Ukraine and elsewhere," Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson said in a statement.
