Rapid political developments, as former Prime Minister and SYRIZA President, Alexis Tsipras, has handed over his parliamentary mandate.
In a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alexis Tsipras declares his intention to resign from his parliamentary position.
"After 16 years in Parliament, as an MP, party leader, leader of the main opposition and Prime Minister, I made a decision of conscience:
To resign from his parliamentary position.
Shortly before the start of the new parliamentary session, I submitted my resignation to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
It was not an easy decision, nor was it painless.
I resign because I cannot and do not want to hold the office of MP, with all the privileges that this brings, when I feel that my participation, especially with the special status of former Prime Minister, offers nothing essential to those who trusted me.
Because I cannot and do not want to formally participate in a Parliament that, democratically stripped bare, with the responsibility primarily of the majority, is unable to fulfill the role mandated by the Constitution and demanded by the citizens.
However, I am resigning as a SYRIZA MP, I am not resigning from political action.
In a period where our homeland is at a dangerous impasse: economic, political, geostrategic, but above all moral, hope is needed.
Through actions and not just words. Actions that prove that we are not all the same. Actions that only with these can we overcome today's obstacles.
If those responsible for the democratic opposition cannot put aside their selfishness in order for change to happen, then we must all become the change we expect.
"Let's take the future into our own hands. This is worth every effort and every battle," Tsipras' letter says.
After 16 years in the Parliament, as a deputy, leader of the party, leader of the anti-police office and prime minister, I made a decision:
