Andy Burnham has officially taken office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after being tasked by King Charles III to form a new government, succeeding Keir Starmer at the helm of the country. He is Britain's seventh prime minister since 2016, in a period characterised by frequent political changes.
In his first speech outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham acknowledged that the country has gone through a decade of political instability. Burnham said his generation of politicians must "raise the bar" and restore public trust in politics.
The new prime minister presented his vision for a new political and economic model, arguing that several decisions taken in the 1980s led to the centralization of political power, the privatization of economic power, and the weakening of many industrial regions, which, according to him, have not yet recovered.
According to Burnham, his government will aim to make politics more collaborative and problem-solving oriented rather than political confrontation. He also promised to decentralize decision-making and empower local communities across the country. Burnham said he aims to place services and sectors that he described as essential to citizens' lives under stronger public control, with the aim of making them more affordable and improving living standards.
" I am fully aware that I am the sixth person in the last ten years to walk this path, the seventh prime minister since 2016, making this a moment for reflection and new solutions. It requires my generation of politicians to raise our standard and rise to the new challenge. Britain must show the world that we can regain our stability and that is our challenge to make politics work, to make it work better. I know that people in the country are fed up with politics.
I hear you, and I want to be honest with you, we haven't been good enough and we need to be better. A new political model and a new economic model. In the 1980s, Britain took a few wrong turns. Political power was centralised, economic power was privatised, large parts of the country were industrialised and they have yet to recover. Many people feel like they are still in decline and they don't have the ability to change things. And that is why we are going to change politics, to make it more collaborative, more about solving problems than about scoring points.
"And we're going to take the energy from here and bring it to every zip code in the country, so they can do more and, by doing more, build a new economy where we put the essentials of life back under stronger public control, to make them affordable for you again ," he said.
