United States President Donald Trump described the 2026 World Cup as the greatest event ever organized by FIFA. After the final between Spain and Argentina, he said he had cheered for the Argentines, but admitted that the Spanish national team was superior on the field of play.
Trump also revealed that after the match he had a phone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, whom he congratulated on his team's triumph, dismissing suggestions of tensions between them.
"FIFA was extraordinary. There's never been anything like it, maybe in terms of an event, let alone in football. It was extraordinary. It was four times bigger than any event FIFA has ever held, and it's probably about five times bigger actually, I'm told today. So we're very proud of our country.
"We're very proud of the work that was done by everyone. We congratulate Gianni Infantino and his entire staff and the incredible job they did. But this was one of the greatest events of any kind ever held. No, I wasn't sad that Argentina lost. I think both teams played well. I would say Spain played better, really. But both played well and made it to the final and, actually, it was very exciting. It seems like Spain dominated, but it was a very close race. I spoke to the Spanish prime minister and congratulated him on having a great team ," Trump said.
Spain won the 2026 World Cup after defeating Argentina by a narrow 1-0 score in the grand final, lifting the most prestigious trophy in world football for the second time in history.
