US President Joe Biden said on Sunday that "the guns in Gaza have fallen silent" as Hamas handed over three hostages, the first of 33 to be released during the first phase of the ceasefire that took effect on Sunday.
" The deal I first proposed last May for the Middle East has finally come to fruition. The ceasefire has come into effect in Gaza, and today, we are seeing the hostages released, three Israeli women held against their will in dark tunnels for 470 days. After so much pain, so much destruction, so much loss of life, today, the guns in Gaza have fallen silent," Biden said.
The outgoing US president further told reporters that he was "pleased" that his team and President-elect Trump's team spoke with one voice in the final days of his presidency to help finalize the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal.
“I was pleased that our team spoke with one voice in the last few days. It was both necessary, effective and unprecedented, but success will require perseverance and continued support for our friends in the region and a belief in diplomacy backed by deterrence. It is now up to the next administration to help implement this agreement ,” Biden said on his last day as US president.
Displaced Gazans have begun returning to their homes, while aid trucks loaded with much-needed supplies have passed into the enclave.
