Tensions escalate, US attacks ship leaving Venezuela

The United States has carried out a direct strike in the southern Caribbean, destroying a vessel that Washington said was transporting drugs from Venezuela. The news was first announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who called it “a lethal strike against a vessel operated by a declared narco-terrorist organization.”

President Donald Trump reinforced the message from the Oval Office, declaring that “our forces just shot down a boat full of drugs, coming straight from Venezuela.” Trump warned that this was just the beginning of a series of operations against international trafficking networks. “There are many more to come after this,” he said, linking the action to his administration’s efforts to stop the flow of narcotics into the United States.

The operation is seen as a clear escalation of the US stance towards the regime of Nicolas Maduro and the cartels operating from Venezuelan territory. The move is expected to inflame tensions in the region, where the US has concentrated troops and military assets, while Caracas has yet to give an official reaction.

Meanwhile, Rubio has begun a diplomatic tour of Mexico and Ecuador, while simultaneously describing the operation as evidence of Washington's determination to treat the cartels as terrorist organizations. This new development is expected to raise concerns not only in Venezuela but also in neighboring countries, due to the possibility of further regional destabilization.
