Trump orders relocation of US Space Command from Colorado to Alabama

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday afternoon that the headquarters of the US Space Command will be moved from Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Huntsville, Alabama. This is a reversal of Trump's first decision in 2018, when he re-established the Space Command, which had been merged with the US Strategic Command since 2002, by executive order.

The primary mission of this command is to protect American interests in space, especially the protection of satellites used by US land, naval, and air forces for navigation, communications, and surveillance.

In 2023, President Joe Biden decided to keep the headquarters in Colorado, overturning Trump's plan to move it to Alabama. He was convinced by then-Space Command commander Gen. James Dickinson that the move would hurt military readiness. The decision sparked intense political debate and led to an investigation by the Pentagon's Inspector General, at the request of the House Armed Services Committee, chaired by Republican Mike Rogers of Alabama.

The investigation concluded that Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville was the Air Force's preferred option for the new headquarters, but setting up infrastructure there would take three to four years. These concerns about timelines and the impact on readiness were why Biden decided to keep the headquarters in Colorado.

With his return to power, Trump has also reinstated the plan to move the command to Alabama, delivering a political victory to southern Republicans and a blow to the Biden administration's decision.

What is US Space Command?

Space Command was originally created in 1985 to manage U.S. military operations in space. In 2002, it was disbanded and its functions were transferred to Strategic Command. After a 2018 law, it was re-established and a year later Trump elevated it to the level of one of the Pentagon's 11 permanent combatant commands.

Currently, according to General Stephen Whiting, commander of Space Command, the headquarters has about 1,700 personnel at Peterson Base in Colorado Springs, while a total of 18,000 joint troops stationed globally work in support of its mission.

The move to Alabama is expected to take years and considerable expense, but Trump's decision is seen as a strong political signal that he intends to reassert his influence over US strategic defense policies and the new race for dominance in space.
