Assad sheltered in Moscow, Russia withdraws military assets from Syria

After the fall of Assad, Moscow has started moving military assets from Syria.

A long convoy of Russian military vehicles pulled out of the western Syrian city of Latakia. They headed for the nearby city of Tartus, where the Kremlin has a naval base.

This is the third time in a week that Moscow has removed its military assets from the country. This has fueled rumors of a possible Russian withdrawal, shortly after its well-known ally President Bashar al-Assad was ousted from power.

The spokesman of the new transitional government in Syria has spoken about the country's new position.

"I think Russia should review its presence on Syrian territory, along with its interests, which were linked to the criminal regime of Assad," said Obeida Arnaout, a spokesman for the Syrian government.

The call for Russia's withdrawal from Syria can be interpreted as a call to build bridges of communication with the West. The EU announced that it has established the first contacts with the Syrian rebels since the fall of Assad. Guaranteeing a Syria away from Russian influence is on the bloc's agenda.

"It should be a condition for the new leadership to remove Russian influence, as Syria has become a base from which they carry out activities in Africa and the southern neighbors. This is something that is a concern for European security" , said the High Representative of the EU, Kaja Kallas.

The rebel movement Hayat Tahrir al Sham has declared that its plan is to build a country based on unity and justice. But the group's history, marked by terrorist activities, makes many European countries wary of it.
