Following the conclusion of the World Cup group stage, members of FIFA's Technical Study Group (TSG) – Pablo Zabaleta, Jon Dahl Tomason, Gilberto Silva and Otto Ado – together with FIFA's senior football expert Pascal Zuberbyhler, as well as Tom Gardner from FIFA Football Performance Insights, presented the first assessment of the expanded tournament during a press conference.
Among them was the former assistant coach of Silvinjo at the Albanian National Team, Pablo Zabaleta, who assessed that concerns about an increase in one-sided matches were not well-founded.
" You can see that even the favourite teams have encountered difficulties in the group stage and this shows that today there are no easy matches anymore. You have to perform at a high level to win. It is also noticeable that the players no longer waste time, as they know that they cannot leave the team with 10 men, even for a minute. Even the goalkeepers act faster when controlling the ball and avoid delays, because otherwise they risk being penalised with a corner kick. I think the new rules have improved the dynamics of the game ", declared Zabaleta.
