A United States Air Force Boeing WC-135R “Constant Phoenix” radiological monitoring aircraft issued an emergency signal (code 7700) after completing classified missions over Northern Europe.
According to data published by Flightradar24, the specialized aircraft encountered an unusual situation while returning to its base. The Russian agency TASS reported that the aircraft took off from RAF Mildenhall base in the United Kingdom and then headed for Norway, passing over the North Sea.
After spending about an hour and a half in Norwegian airspace, the crew turned back. The incident occurred as the plane was approaching British airspace. At that moment, the transponder began transmitting the international code 7700, which signals an emergency or a serious system failure.
The Boeing WC-135R “Constant Phoenix” is a unique radiotechnical support aircraft. Its primary mission consists of collecting atmospheric samples to detect and identify possible contamination caused by nuclear weapons testing.
The reconnaissance aircraft stayed in the air for about five hours.
