President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner joined a major EU-backed conference on Gaza via video link on Monday, as Brussels launched a nearly 900 million euro international initiative aimed at restoring essential services and starting the territory's early recovery.
The Palestine Donors Group meeting brings together 65 delegations and launched the Team Gaza Initiative, with an initial package of €883.6 million. The funding will support water supply and sanitation, waste disposal, healthcare, energy, agriculture and food systems.
Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump and a member of the US-appointed Gaza Executive Board, has played a central role in developing Washington's post-war plan for the territory, including its proposals for reconstruction, investment and governance under the Peace Board. An EU official, who was granted anonymity to speak freely on the matter, confirmed that he was involved in the call on Monday afternoon.
Kushner's participation is a victory for the European Commission, which is seeking to coordinate support between the US-backed Peace Board, the Palestinian Authority, European governments and established international aid bodies.
Among the pledges announced on Monday, the Commission and the European Investment Bank proposed to contribute 257 million euros to the package, with the participation of Spain, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium and the World Bank.
The conference comes days after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced the first Palestinian legislative elections since 2006.
