With his dark hair and wild scandals, Silvio Berlusconi immediately stood out and cultivated a larger-than-life personality.
He also became famous for his questionable sense of humor after a series of high-profile gaffes. On one occasion, he suggested that a German MEP would have made a good concentration camp guard - and on another, claimed that Mussolini was actually a good leader.
He dismissed these statements as a joke.
However, he was also a longtime friend of Vladimir Putin and blamed Ukraine for Russia's invasion when his government was strongly behind Kiev.
It is perhaps his involvement in almost every aspect of Italian life that most angered his critics - especially his media empire, which, many say, gave him an unfair advantage in the election.
Many Italians who voted for him felt that his success as a business tycoon was proof of his abilities, a reason why he should lead the country.
Berlusconi himself rejected claims that mixing business and politics had been more beneficial to him personally than to Italy as a whole.
"If taking care of everyone's interests I also take care of mine, there can be no talk of a conflict of interest", he declared.
