Democrats were caught in an apparent stalemate on Saturday as embattled Joe Biden continued to endure high-profile calls to end his re-election campaign after a week of surprise moves by the party to oust the president.
In the weeks since his disastrous debate performance against Trump, the 81-year-old Biden has tried to fight calls for him to step down from the top of the ticket amid concerns that his age and mental acuity are no longer up to the job. But a series of interviews, a press conference and speeches have done little to quell the party's nerves.
Frustration within the Democratic establishment over what they see as Biden's inconsistencies comes after the newspaper also reported Saturday that the president is privately complaining that former aides to Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton would lecture him on election strategy.
Some advisers reportedly believe Biden is staying at least until Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits Washington on Wednesday. But some donors say this is the ideal time for Biden to step down now that Republicans have held their convention and Democrats have a month until their convention in Chicago to tell a new story about a new candidate.
