No one knows exactly what the process would be to select a new nominee if Joe Biden were to retire, but many Democrats say any process is more likely than ever to end quickly with Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee.
Informal conversations about how a fight to replace Biden would play out have been raging behind the scenes for weeks. But the uncertainty surrounding the process has been so unclear that many Democrats, even those with serious concerns about Biden, have been told to hold off on opposing the president's candidacy, given that what comes next could be even more messy.
Internal polls show that Harris would at least be more helpful in boosting Democratic enthusiasm and helping narrow down-ballot races. Arguments that she would be quicker to organize a campaign are landing. Daydreams that she is making a more active and vigorous case against Donald Trump are taking root.
Many are deliberately refraining from talking about speculation as Biden aides say he plans to return to the campaign trail next week after recovering from Covid-19. But if that suddenly changes, several top Democratic politicians and operatives told CNN, they can't realistically see this ending any other way.
Some are pushing for a quick, closed process where delegates will bless the exchange as part of their planned virtual nomination plan before the convention.
Others reject the idea of a coronation, either because they prefer others or don't like the way it would look. But while there are thoughts of quickly creating a series of blitz primaries or town halls, no one can agree on how that would work with just over 100 days until the election and much less than that before Democrats are scheduled to to meet in Chicago.
Still, it's an idea some Harris supporters support, doubting anyone serious would challenge him, as much chest puffing as there is behind the scenes.
Many Democratic members of Congress who have called for Biden to step down declined Friday when asked by CNN if they were ready to say they want Harris to be the nominee.
If nothing else, people attached to some of the other more serious possible options and others accept it, they are likely to feel swayed by their party loyalties and their ambitions for the future.
Some Democrats believe that, even with the threat of early voting deadlines, it could be resolved on the convention floor in late August. However, if it takes that long, many Democrats predicted that the hunger for solutions would only intensify.
