US-Iran talks, delegations avoid contact; what's happening in Islamabad

The American delegation has arrived in Pakistan, ahead of the very important talks that the United States and Iran will hold in Islamabad.

The delegations have avoided contact, as the American one arrived in Islamabad after the Iranian one.

The American side is led by Vice President JD Vance, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Iran's delegation is led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghaliba, accompanied by Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister; Ali Akbar Ahmadian, secretary of Iran's defense council; Abdolnaser Hemmati, governor of Iran's central bank; and several members of the Iranian parliament. Ghalibaf said on Friday that two previously agreed measures, a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of frozen Iranian assets, "must be fulfilled before negotiations can begin." Israel and the United States have denied that the ceasefire extends to Lebanon.

The planned talks come as Trump threatened new strikes if talks fail, adding that the Iranians "have no cards" and the only reason they are alive "is to negotiate." Trump told the New York Post that the US is loading its warships with "the best weapons" in case talks with Tehran fail. "And if we don't have a deal, we will use them and we will use them very effectively," he said.

Meanwhile, Lebanon and Israel have agreed to meet in Washington on Tuesday to discuss a ceasefire and set a date for the start of talks. Tuesday's talks will be mediated by the US and will take place in the US state...

Lebanon's Health Ministry on Wednesday updated the death toll from the most brutal Israeli attacks on the country in years to 357. That brings the total number of people killed in Lebanon since Israel renewed its offensive on March 2 to more than 1,953. The number of wounded is 6,303, the health ministry added.

In an address to the nation ahead of the talks, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the upcoming US-Iran talks in Islamabad would be "important to achieve," warning that the next phase would determine whether a lasting ceasefire could be secured.

Ghalibaf said in a statement after arriving in Islamabad that “Iran has come in good faith, but it does not trust the US. Iran is ready for a deal if the US presents a real deal and recognizes Iran’s rights.”

A statement by Foreign Minister Dar expressed hope for constructive talks. Dar said Pakistan will continue to facilitate a lasting and lasting solution between the parties. He said he hoped both sides would engage in constructive talks.
