Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, said that upcoming talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad will be crucial for developments on the ground.
"Negotiations will be important to achieve," Sharif said in an address to the nation, warning that "the next phase will determine whether a sustainable ceasefire can be secured."
Ahead of the negotiations, an Iranian delegation led by the Speaker of Parliament, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, arrived in Islamabad on Friday evening. The delegation's plane was escorted by Pakistani fighter jets as it entered the country's airspace. The delegation was received by Army Chief Asim Munir and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Upon arrival, Ghalibaf stated that: “Iran has come in good faith, but it does not trust the US.” He added that “Iran is ready for a deal if the US presents a real deal and recognizes Iran’s rights.”
On the other hand, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed expectations for a positive outcome, stressing that Pakistan "will continue to facilitate a sustainable and long-term solution" and that he expects the parties to "engage in constructive talks."
