The Middle East risks entering a new phase of uncertainty this afternoon, as the clash between the United States and Iran is accompanied by direct statements and mutual threats.
US President Donald Trump signaled earlier that developments in the coming hours could be decisive for the future of the region and beyond. In a public reaction, he suggested that the situation could lead to profound political changes in Iran.
" An entire civilization will die tonight, never to return. I don't want it to happen, but maybe it will. However, now that we have a complete and total regime change, where different, smarter, less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionary and wonderful could happen, who knows?
"We will discover tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the world. 47 years of extortion, corruption and death, will finally come to an end. God bless the great people of Iran! " Trump wrote.
On the other hand, Iran's response has been equally direct. According to Iranian state media, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, authorities have made it clear that any attack on civilian targets will receive an immediate and equal response.
" We will strike the infrastructure of America and its partners in order to deprive them and their allies of the region's oil and gas for many years ," the statement said.
The Revolutionary Guard also emphasizes that Iranian military capabilities extend beyond the region and that the response will not be limited to the Middle East if, according to it, the US crosses "red lines."
Meanwhile, efforts to facilitate talks between the US and Iran are still ongoing, two Pakistani sources with knowledge of the discussions told Reuters, as attacks on Iran intensify.
