The United States and regional mediators are intensifying efforts to reach a 45-day ceasefire in the conflict with Iran as a step toward a permanent agreement. However, progress remains limited, according to officials familiar with the negotiations, cited by the Wall Street Journal.
The talks are focused on securing a temporary cessation of hostilities that could serve as a basis for ending the conflict. However, Iran-linked mediators are refusing to accept an interim deal that would include opening the Strait of Hormuz or giving up its stockpile of enriched uranium, according to the same sources.
According to reported information, Tehran is ready to lift the de facto blockade of this strategic sea route only within the framework of a permanent ceasefire. At the same time, Iran intends to maintain control over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, while the revenue from the passage fees would be shared with Oman.
Iranian officials have also informed the mediators that they expect the United States to continue attacks on targets inside Iran and for Israel to continue airstrikes against senior Iranian officials, even if talks with Washington continue.
