Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto warns that the world is facing its worst crisis in decades, where military power is triumphing over diplomacy. According to him, if the conflict is not stopped, within a month there is a risk of a total blockage of vital systems and a fall into the abyss of human stupidity.

In this exclusive interview, Guido Crosetto analyzes the risks of a possible nuclear escalation, Europe's vulnerability in the face of Donald Trump's unpredictable moves, and the urgent need for political unity to face an energy and economic emergency that is knocking at the door.
We are facing a new ultimatum from Donald Trump to Iran. Are we moving away from the end of the war?
I hope that everyone becomes aware of what we are experiencing. It is a situation that has no precedent in the history of recent decades. We have a mixture of crises that are accumulating, feeding on each other, and that are increasingly difficult to resolve.
And this puts those who want to reason in front of the great weakness of multilateralism, which failed to learn lessons from what happened in the last century and did not consolidate antibodies for what we are living through now.
The UN was built...
Of course, but we have let it die slowly. We have let it lose every ability to influence and role. Unfortunately, in a scenario like the one we are going through, only power matters to us. Don't be fooled into thinking that we can talk about technological or economic power.
What is really weighing today is military power. Despite this, the conflict in Ukraine and the one in Iran are showing that what determines the duration of conflicts is the resistance capacity of the weaker party. It happened once in Afghanistan, but even then no one thought to put the experience to work. And thus fundamentalist terrorism was nurtured.
What are you afraid of?
I fear that what is already dramatic could escalate even further. Because I know that humanity has proven to us that stupidity has no limits. Remember that it was human beings like us who decided that to end a conflict it was acceptable to drop nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Unfortunately, we continue to have nuclear weapons and those who don't have them want them. So we haven't learned anything...
You're talking about a nuclear threat, so is the danger real?
I don't even want to say that word. The danger is madness, and what we are seeing is a conflict where action is matched by a reaction of a higher level.

Jo, nuk më duket se kundërshtarët e tij në SHBA po e mendojnë. Besoj se duhet të ketë bashkëpunëtorë më të guximshëm. Një nga problemet e kësaj presidence është se askush nuk guxon të kundërshtojë shefin.
Irani i ajatollahëve, në krye të ekstremizmit antiperëndimor dhe që mbante peng çdo liri, ishte një problem i të gjithëve. Dhe me këtë luftë të vendosur nga dy persona, pa konsultim dhe legjitimitet ndërkombëtar, i kanë bërë një dhuratë regjimit.
A nuk besoni se edhe Evropa duhet ta kundërshtojë me më shumë bindje?
Evropa bën aq sa mundet, por nuk më duket se ka sukses. Ndërkohë, secili duhet të bëjë pjesën e vet. Italia mori një pozicion të rëndësishëm dhe serioz kur tha se nuk është dakord me luftën, duke u përpjekur të kufizojë maksimalisht dëmet.
Por e kemi bërë me vonesë. A nuk mendoni se tani mund të bëhet më shumë, siç po kërkon opozita?
Vërtet mendoni se raportet ndërkombëtare menaxhohen duke bërë garë se kush arrin i pari të bëjë një deklaratë? Italia nuk është aleate e Trump-it apo Biden-it, ne jemi aleatë të Shteteve të Bashkuara. Vetëm kush është budalla mund të mendojë se mund të pritet shumë nga kjo aleancë.
Le të mendojmë për momentin, për Iranin që vendos të reagojë duke lëshuar një raketë kundër nesh. Po të mos ishte mbrojtja e NATO-s, çdo vend do të rrezikonte shumë më tepër dhe do të ishte shumë më i pambrojtur.
Trump dëshiron të nxjerrë SHBA-në nga NATO...
Nuk besoj dhe nuk mund ta bëjë këtë. Do t’i duhej vota e Kongresit dhe dyshoj se do të ishte pro. Por mundet të vendosë të tërheqë ushtarët amerikanë nga Evropa. Dhe kjo do të na bënte më të dobët, më pak të mbrojtur. Në këtë moment nuk jemi në gjendje të reagojmë të gjithë bashkë duke i zëvendësuar ata.
Pra sipas jush nuk mund të bëhet asgjë?
Sigurisht duhet dialog, aktivitet diplomatik. Trump e ka axhendën të diktuar nga dëshira për të fituar shpejt, edhe sepse do të duhet të përballet me zgjedhjet e nëntorit. Kjo luftë po vë në rrezik edhe Shtetet e Bashkuara në udhëheqjen e tyre botërore.
Dhjetë ditë më parë refuzuat përdorimin e bazës së Sigonellës nga SHBA-ja, por ka dyshime se në raste të tjera e keni lejuar. Do ta mohoni në parlament?
Do ta mohoj patjetër sepse nuk është e vërtetë. Por nuk besoj se ka dyshime, pasi nuk është një temë e menaxhuar nga politika, por nga ushtria. Ne kemi detyrimin t’i lëmë bazat hapur sepse këtë parashikojnë traktatet dhe sepse të gjitha qeveritë janë sjellë në të njëjtën mënyrë, por kemi rregulla. Janë marrëveshje që nuk i kemi nënshkruar ne. Nëse paraardhësve tanë nuk u pëlqenin, mund t’i anulonin ose të paktën t’i vinin në diskutim. Por kjo s’ka ndodhur.
At the end of her visit to the Persian Gulf, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that Italy may not have enough energy reserves. Is there an emergency plan?
Her trip served to assure us that we are a privileged center for the reserves of those states that are sovereign and whose word is an absolute guarantee.
Is there a risk that everything will be blocked within a month?
It's the scenario we fear the most. Of course, not everything, but a lot.
And what do you plan to do?
The room for manoeuvre is inevitably limited, especially if we do not all act together. This is the case to prove that we are up to date without being content with implementing bureaucracy. Europe must understand this. I have just spoken to my Japanese colleague and to the Kuwaiti Minister of Defence. The line must be clear: to survive we must not be trapped by bureaucratic rules fixed in times of growth.
What about in Italy?
My position does not stem from the referendum result. I want to be clear: the majority and the opposition must lay down their arms, we must find moments of cohesion, cooperate to face a crisis that, as I said, has no precedent.
Restructuring of the current government or early elections?
Resilience. We are forced to resist because we can afford anything at this moment, except a crisis. I would say this to anyone in government. It would be easier and certainly much more comfortable for us to go to early elections.
