Vice President Iliana Yotova has officially assumed the duties of President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
It should be noted that Yotova is the first female head of state in the country's history.
Bulgaria's Constitutional Court accepted the resignation of President Rumen Radev, paving the way for the automatic transfer of presidential powers to Yotova, in accordance with the country's Constitution.
According to reports, following the Constitutional Court's decision, Iliana Yotova immediately assumes the functions of president without having to take a new oath before the National Assembly.
She took the relevant oath in 2021, when she assumed office as Vice President. In accordance with the constitutional framework, a new Vice President will not be appointed during her term.
Iliana Yotova began her public career as a journalist, before joining the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), where she was active for several years until 2016. She was then elected as a Member of the Bulgarian Parliament and later as a Member of the European Parliament, gaining extensive parliamentary experience at both the national and European levels.
For the past nine years, Yotova has served as Vice President of Bulgaria, providing institutional continuity that facilitates her transition to the presidency.
On Friday afternoon, Rumen Radev left the presidential palace in an official ceremony, accompanied by his successor.
It is recalled that Rumen Radev announced his resignation on January 19, becoming the first president in Bulgaria's modern democratic history to leave office before the end of his term.
