Thousands of people have protested in one of the largest demonstrations in Russia since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The demonstrators gathered against the decision of a court, which sentenced the well-known activist Fail Alsynov to 4 years in prison.
The activist was convicted over a rally he held in April 2023 over plans to mine gold in Bashkortostan, which is located in Russia's southern Ural Mountains, near the border between Europe and Asia.
Alsynov, the former leader of a banned Bashkortostan group that for years promoted the language and culture of the Bashkirs, was immediately arrested. He told his supporters that he "didn't expect" such a harsh sentence that prosecutors had sought and that he would appeal it.
Meanwhile, the situation became tense and the demonstrators were violently dispersed by the police in Baimak.
In Baymak, #Bashkortostan republic, #Russia , there are escalating scuffles with the police taking place at a #protest rally.
