The leaders of Europe's two biggest political parties are hosting lavish dinners as they try to repair their damaged relationship.
Manfred Weber of the European People's Party (EPP) and Iratxe García of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), along with 10 MEPs from each group, were at a dinner in Strasbourg last month, according to five people who attended the meeting. More such meetings are expected in the future.
The idea is to stop clashes between the two traditional allies after a turbulent year, during which they have clashed over issues ranging from the European Union's migration policy to the European Commission's regulatory simplification agenda.
The first dinner took place on February 10 at the 4-star Hotel Leonor in the center of Strasbourg, where a three-course menu can cost around 85 euros per person, not including wine. The EPP paid the bill. The next dinner is expected to be organized in April.
Christophe Clergeau, S&D vice-president and a participant at the dinner, told Politico that the meeting had two main purposes: for the group vice-presidents to get to know each other better and to openly discuss grievances.
“It was necessary to have a frank and direct discussion in a diplomatic way,” Clergeau said, adding “there are problems, the game that the EPP plays with the far right, the Commission’s deregulation agenda, as well as the numerous initiatives that weaken the Green Deal and social and environmental legislation.”
The dinner “was nice, very friendly and we agreed to send the message that we are a coalition and that we like each other,” said Croatian EPP vice-chair Zeljana Zovko, another participant, who humorously said that the two groups were “flirting.”
The EPP and S&D have worked together for decades, often voting together and sharing key positions in the European Union. But that alliance is beginning to fray, as the 2024 European elections shifted the Parliament further to the right. The EPP is now passing several laws by voting alongside the far-right Patriots group, which includes Hungary’s Viktor Orban and France’s Marine Le Pen.

“Aksidente politike”
Në muajt e fundit, PPE ka votuar disa ligje për forcimin e politikës së migracionit dhe për reduktimin e disa rregullave mjedisore së bashku me grupet e djathta dhe të ekstremit të djathtë në Parlament.
Në një kohë kur shumica e qeverive në Evropë po lëvizin gjithashtu drejt së djathtës, Socialdemokratët janë përjashtuar gjithnjë e më shumë nga ndikimi në agjendën politike të BE-së. Kjo i ka shtyrë ata të ashpërsojnë retorikën ndaj Weber dhe von der Leyen.

Presidentja e Komisionit i ka mbijetuar të katër mocioneve të mosbesimit të paraqitura gjatë këtij mandati. Megjithatë, disa eurodeputetë thonë se argumentet për largimin e saj vazhdojnë të ekzistojnë.

Senior S&D lawmakers have warned that discontent is growing within the group, which could make it difficult for leaders to control MEPs’ votes. This was also the case last year when García and the EPP reached a compromise to reduce green rules for businesses, but many social democrat MEPs voted against it.
Hoping for improvement
The leaders of the EPP and S&D know that their relationship will probably never be the same again. EPP lawmakers now feel comfortable voting on laws and setting the Parliament's agenda alongside the right-wing majority.
Weber told Politico that "no one will stop him" from implementing the EPP's program and argued that when the group has voted alongside the far right, it has not been for radical positions, but for positions that reflect the views of national governments and the European Commission.
On Monday, the EPP voted again with the right-wing bloc for a bill allowing countries to set up deportation centers in countries outside the EU, after negotiations within the central coalition failed.
Meanwhile, the S&D is gradually trying to adapt to the new political reality. In an internal meeting on March 3, the group leaders discussed ways to improve internal coordination and avoid MEPs rebelling against the group line.
The goal is to strengthen personal commitment, collective political judgment, internal trust and coordination, and the shared ability to act effectively as a group.
After this meeting, García's spokesperson, Andrea Maceiras, told Politico that the first imminent political test for the group will be the interim report on the EU's long-term budget (MFF).
The Social Democrats aim to put pressure on the EPP on files where the right-wing bloc does not have a consensus, such as the EU's multi-year budget, to achieve political victory.
Although trust between the two groups still needs to be repaired, the first dinner was considered by both sides as a success, so much so that another one is being planned.
This time, the Social Democrats are expected to pick the seat and foot the bill.
