The US State Department said on Saturday that it has authorized the removal of non-essential personnel from the US embassy in Jerusalem and its branch in Tel Aviv, as well as the employees' family members "due to the unpredictable security situation in Israel".
"Terrorist groups, terrorist individuals, and other violent extremists continue to plot potential attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza," the State Department said in a statement. Meanwhile, the US government is encouraging its citizens in Gaza to head south towards the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, to be ready to leave in the event of its possible reopening.
A State Department spokesman noted that if U.S. citizens feel it is safe to approach that border point to be ready to cross because if the crossing opens it may stay open for a limited time. /VOA
