Debate over Iranian bunker attack, former CIA chief: Everyone should take a deep

Leon Panetta: "Everyone should take a deep breath and wait, assessing the damage in Iran takes time"

Former US Secretary of Defense and former CIA director Leon Panetta has called for prudence and restraint in assessments of the recent US attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.

In an interview with Sky News, Panetta stressed that many people are "rushing to conclusions" while there is still no full analysis of the damage caused.

"We need several weeks to build an accurate assessment of the level of damage. It is very important that everyone takes a deep breath and allows this process to unfold peacefully," he said.

US President Donald Trump's administration has been embroiled in a clash with domestic media after a leaked US intelligence report suggested that Iran's nuclear capabilities had not been "completely destroyed", as claimed by the White House.

Along the same lines, President Trump has denied reports that Iran may have managed to move some of its enriched uranium before the US attacks took place.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said earlier in the day that the US has "no indication" that any uranium has been moved.

Despite official denials, Panetta considers it a "reasonable hypothesis" that Iranian authorities may have taken measures to protect enriched uranium.

"This raises a real concern that Tehran may decide to continue its nuclear program and attempt to build a nuclear weapon," he said.
